One of the things I have really been enjoying even more than seeing the book go out the door to people who need it are the 1:1 coaching calls I have had with more than a few of you. I get a great sense of accomplishment when I watch someone go from unsure and full of self-doubt to being someone with a plan and a sense of resolve.

Obviously I hope it has been a help to all that have taken advantage of it, but this blog is about how much it helps me .. the "coach".

Sometimes, the issue is as simple as "another sane person telling me I'm not crazy", and other times I have to break the bad news that the patient/provider relationship they are in is toxic and we need to start working on a new one. But when all is said and done, I get to look across the computer screen and see someone take on a visual transformation from "I don't know what to do" to "I can do this, I have what I need now". I love watching the light come on as they realize they are not the problem. The problem is the system that isn't designed to care for patients or providers.

A lot of times, my guests actually have providers that want to help, but they also want to "stay out of trouble" and that is where the real value of me being a provider can help. I know what their concerns are because I have them too. But concerns should not keep patient and providers from transacting - which means to each get what they need out of the relationship. Talking to a provider about how to talk to a provider can be very useful.

Some of you might wish for me to be in the room when you actually meet with the provider, but most of the time, that is not as helpful as just being prepared - providers tend to get defensive around other providers.

So, if you need help - let me know. I need help feeling useful, and helping you slay your medical dragons does just that.
