I was pregnant probably about 9 weeks ago… Tuesday I took my shot, Saturday I miscarried… do you think that was possibly the reason? Should I stop taking my monjouro shots if I suspect I’m pregnant should I immediately stop taking the shots?

First of all, I am so very sorry for what happened. The answer to your question is somewhat complex and of course, since I know nothing about you but your question, my answer is going to be a bit suspect as well, but I do have a LOT of thoughts that your question generated, and I think someone could benefit from the answer. So, here we go.

Let me break this in to several sub questions. Some will be generated by your question and others will be generated as I work though your question.

Did mounjaro cause my miscarriage?

Was the shot the reason for the miscarriage, no, not directly. But, it very well may be contributory. Needless to say, no one was pregnant in the studies that caused the drug to be approved by the FDA. So no data exists (or to be more accurate, it is so patchy, it would not be appropriate to apply what has been seen to the entire "at risk" population) on the correlation between GLP-1 therapy with bad pregnancy outcomes. However, given the goals of GLP-1 therapy and the goals of pregnancy, it is safe to say that they are clinically contraindicated to each other.

Why are they contraindicated to each other?

Because the goals are completely different. Mounjaro is designed to help you lose weight and while it is not abnormal to lose weight in the first trimester, that is no the "goal" per se, rather it is start building the life growing inside you, and this requires significant nutrients, including fats and sugars that are extremely problematic on GLP-1 therapy. These are the things that will increase the side effects of the therapy and the things you crave to a much lower level because of the effects of Mounjaro (or ozempic, or even Trulicity). So, it is theoretically possible that being on the therapy itself made your pregnancy not nutritionally viable.

I want to lean HEAVILY on the word "theoretically" - because you and I (and everyone reading for that matter) knows all about folks who had completely crappy nutrition for one reason or another and carried their baby to term. Still you can see how the two treatment plans (pregnancy and GLP-1 therapy) are not in alignment.

However, it is also likely Mounjaro helped you GET pregnant in the first place.

The metabolic changes brought about by being on GLP-1 therapy are very conducive to increased fertility and I believe (not taking the time to go check my facts in this moment) that when Mounjaro first came out, there was a warning to use alternative birth control especially in first 90 days. So, it is not all bad news as it relates to having two goals - 1) conception and 2) weight loss.

But: You still need to prioritize.

Remember I give all my advice as if I was in your shoes, and this one is a little harder because I can literally never be in your shoes, but when I use my imagination

I think that I would ask you to focus on one goal or the other for 6 months, and I would go further and probably ask for that focus to be weight loss, since carrying a baby to term requires you gain back about what I expect you to lose in the next 6 months. I would discuss the whole plan with your PCP, including the two of you determining your priorities and of course I would expect your S.O. to participate. Losing the weight first will create stability in your fertility and hopefully reduce future miscarriage chances.

I hope something in here helps. #loveyou #nobuts
